Baltimore Marathon 2009 Winners Race to Finish Line - by Cheryl Phillips

The Baltimore Marathon 2009 is underway this morning and there will be winners streaming in to the finish line throughout the day. Also known as The Baltimore Running Festival, there are an estimated 20,000 people running through the streets of Baltimore today with crowds cheering them on. Runners from 44 countries and every state will run, including five Olympians.

Results from the 2009 Baltimore Marathon will be easy to access, thanks to the Internet. Race updates will be provided on Twitter throughout the day as The Baltimore Sun newspaper keeps track of results and current happenings at this annual event. Results for individual runners can be accessed on Active.com by simply entering the runner's name or bib number.

The Baltimore Marathon is more than just a running event. Thousands of city residents will participate in the festivities and be there to cheer on the winners as they cross the finish line. Celebration Village is set up near the finish line and will feature live music, interactive games, food and drink until 3 PM. The Village is free there will be plenty of activities for children, as well.

Not only is this a day for runners hoping to win The Baltimore Marathon, it is also a great day for the economy in Baltimore. The size of the event means big business for local businesses. Research done by Towson University revealed that each marathoner brings two people with them and spends about $200 by staying in Baltimore hotels and eating in local restaurants.

Baltimore Business Journal's Heather Harlan stated, "Last year, in the throes of a recession, it generated $22 million. So, the hope is that this year it will go up at least another $4 million, so we will see a $25 million or upwards impact for the businesses that desperately need it right now."

As the 2009 Baltimore Marathon runners race to the finish line, it will prove to be a day full of festivities, goodwill and economic stimulation for the Baltimore area. Results will be streaming in as the runners and the crowds enjoy a exciting day in Baltimore.

Half-Marathon - by Robin lee

Half Marathon

The half-marathon course starts at the corner of Conway and Light Streets (same as last year) at the 13-mile mark of the marathon course. It splits after 2/10 mile (half-marathoners will have their own lane to that point) and rejoins the marathon route later in the race. The separation between the marathon and half-marathon courses alleviates much of the congestion at the merge point and make for a smoother transition.

Date: Saturday, October 10, 2009

Race Start: 9:45 AM

Start Line: Conway and Light Streets

Race Limit: 7,500

Restrictions: 1) Participants in the Half-Marathon must be at least 14 years old and 2) Participants must be able to complete the course in 5 1/2 hours.

Wave Start: In order to maintain a comfortable and safe race experience for all participants, the CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Half Marathon will be using the wave start again in 2009. Bib numbers will have been issued based on expected finish time and will correspond to the holding pen you have been assigned. There will be five (5) holding pens this year and we ask that all participants adhere to this policy and start with their assigned wave. Plase keep in mind that with the D-Tag system, your time will not start until you cross the startline.

Chip Timing: In 2009, the event will utilize a new timing technology. The new system, which replaces ChampionChip, will utilize a light-weight disposable timing tag that will come attached to your race number. On race day, runners simply secure the D-Tag through their shoelaces and they are ready to run.

The D-tag technology offers runners a more streamlined race experience than the traditional chip system. D-Tags are attached to participant bib and clearly marked with the corresponding bib number. This eliminates the need to scan your chip at the expo. In addition, runners do not need to return the tag and can dispose of it at their convenience. This means no more sitting down to undo your shoe lace just after your run and it also means you no longer have to worry about the $30 charge for a lost chip. Click Here for Winning Secret!

Baltimore Marathon - by Wiki

The Baltimore Marathon is the flagship race of several races held in Baltimore, Maryland known collectively as the Baltimore Running Festival. The 7th annual marathon took place on October 11, 2008 and drew a record 17,922 participants. Under Armour, the Baltimore-based athletic apparel company, sponsors the event.

The event continues to draw record participants every year, making it one of the fastest growing marathons in the United States. In 2008, Julius Keter from Kenya won the men's race with a time of 2:11:54, the fastest time in race history. Maria Portilla of Peru won the women's race with a time of 2:36:27.

The marathon at 42.195 kilometres (26.219 mi) begins at the Camden Yards sports complex and travels through many diverse neighborhoods of Baltimore, including the scenic Inner Harbor waterfront area, historic Federal Hill, and Fells Point. Runners also run through Fort McHenry, birthplace of the Star-Spangled Banner. The race ends at virtually the same point at which it starts.

The male and female winners of the 2008 race each won $18,000. Other races that take place are a half-marathon, team relay race, 5K race, and kids fun run.Click Here for Winning Secret!
